!!!........

What the War Grinds
Dr Sa'ad Yasin Yousif
Translated by Prof. Samir Al-Sheikh
The war appears
In a visage of ashes
In braids of fire
Binding around the houses
To gouge out the eyes of the blue windows
Where the curtains afflicted by
The claws of the bomb shells
Throw their torn bodies
Into the slaughtered space,
Wherein the winds frivolously play with
They are echoing the explosion of the glass.
Highly
Between the fire and the smoke
The children's dolls are smashed
Falling down upon
The remaining of the killed tree- trunks.
The war is a grinder.
It grinds not wheat for the poor,
It might grind the sun
So the day sign is turned upside down
While the night sign extinguishes its lanterns
In the mothers' eyes and the shivering little kids
Underneath the terror of the night bombing.
Oh,
Let none tell me about the night bombing
Above the heads of the citied
Befallen by the wars,
For I had undergone it when once
We counted the aircraft missiles;
And the madness of their dumb rockets.
And we felt in the dark
Our children's breaths
And closed their ears from the horror
Of the shrieking rockets before the earthshook
And upon us fell the dust of the angels' fluttering.
