Two Homelands, Two Tombs, Two Dreams, and Two Hopes
By Yahia Al Samawy / Australia
Translation Dr. Baha Alak / USA
I have two homelands:
The first extends as an umbilical cord
Linking the palm trees of Basra1
With the fig groves in Kurdistan2
Exuding grass, joy and safety!
The second is from paper
I instill in it love songs;
They sprout into poetry, silk handkerchiefs, and Anemone coronaries.
I am betwixt them;
A songbird:
My nest is a luminous grove,
My wings are two rivers
But:
In the last dawn prayer of Shaaban3,
Of the National Year of the Elephant they burned4;
The first homeland turned into a cemetery of green joy
The second: turned into
Grief and weeping sequestered in a cave of delirium!
I have two tombs:
The first is in my heart
Where I buried a country
Once overflowing with laughing shores:
Where deer fall asleep without horror,
A kiss leads lovers into every prayer,
And the pedestrian would not turn around in fear of a cleaver,
The blast of a car bomb or the fragments of rancor.
The second tomb:
Lies inside a body living in exile that questions
Where the soul resides now!
I am betwixt them: a walking coffin,
A silent scream fired in exile’s cave
By an oblivious throat!
I have two dreams;
First: to combine my roots with my branches.
Second: to stop the grove keepers from stealing the threshing and the grapes.
I have two hopes:
To produce in each oppressed city a "Guevara",
To demolish, with justice’s axe, the gods’ idols.
The second:
To attend the last murder scene;
Whereby the killing of poverty, oppression, injustice, horror,
and every enemy of human beings takes place.
1 Basra is the second largest city in Iraq located in the south. It is famous for its palm trees and delicious dates.
2 Kurdistan is the autonomous region north of Iraq known for its delicious figs
3 Shaban is the eighth month of the Lunar calendar, referring to the day when the poet escaped from Iraq after the mass uprising of 1991 failed.
4 The National Year of the Elephant: a periphrasis referring to the year of the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Husain Regimen and the aftermath of events that led to the Gulf War, 1991. The name in Islamic history is the year approximately equating to 570 CE. The name is derived from an event said to have occurred at Mecca: Abraha, the Christian ruler of Yemen, which was subject to the Kingdom of Aksum of Ethiopia, marched upon the Kaaba with a large army, which included one or more war elephants, intending to demolish it.
