*I Got Lost in the Material World
I got lost in the material world.
My heart turned into a dress
My arms a pair of pants
My legs a purse.
*
And the whole time I thought about the eyes that would see me
And not about the hand that would touch
And not about the ear that would listen.
*
I’d ironed my plastic cards and had no way
To pay for the merchandise.
I stopped writing poems and wandered among the shops.
*
I thought about money, about ostentation,
About a polished look,
And not about the poems I would read
And not about the voice.
*
I was struck mute, mute, mute,
And I consumed, consumed, consumed.
*
My language thinned out, there was nothing left to hold me,
To restrain me from buying more and more,
Nothing to make me see the fullness of the room,
Of the closet, of life.
*
The more I bought, the less I had.
The less I had, the more I bought.
*
I got lost in the material world
And my heart is a dress,
Fluttering in the hollow winds.
*
*Let the Light
Let the light undress the shadow’s secret from your thin arms.
The blue of your eyes freezes by the flight of the great light
And I sit and stare into the dark, my neck wrapped in your shadowed scarves
For in the next moment you will no longer be as you are at this moment
Your feet sink into the folds of the earth, and this is already the moment that was
And there is no more you as in the moment just past, and the sun turned
To see you sinking, with your heavy tongue, your lung’s muscle clasped
You learn to die in oneness with the dust that gathers on your bones
Outside the shaded room, you wrap the light and undress the world.
