I stretch a rope from the ashes of my hands, O breeze-rain

To your hands

To feel the shiver of your cheeks on my lips

To feel a glow in your hands

A glimpse from the past, the warmth of my mother's bread

The glow of her compassionate smile

Or the warmth of her kiss, the whisper of her prayer at the dawn of an Eid

My hand feels the wetness of the mowed grass

O for the salt of the first tear that clouded in my eyes

O for the taste of the first drop from my mother's breast on my lips

Let me feel you like fragrance

Like warmth on the cheeks of children, like the breeze that  passes after a rainy forenoon

Let me feel you O my God

Like my mother's milk on my lips

O for a nap on the straw-mat

O for  the crystalline water in the earthenware jug

And the pumpkin tree over the roof with green fruit

And the shade in the orchard, hidden as bowered paradise

O for a drop from our forgotten river to quench hell 

O for a drop from our forgotten river, o breeze-rain

Quench a mirage on my lips

Quench deserts in my conscience

O for a drop from our forgotten river, o bread and cheese

Pour your rain on my lips, O earthenware jug

And fall on my heart, on my heart, on the waste-land

الكوز / حسب الشيخ جعفر

وأمد حبلا من رماد، يا مطر النسيم، الى يديك

لأحس في شفتي رعشة وجنتيك

لأحس وهجا في يديك،

لمحا من الماضي، حرارة خبز أمي،

وهج بسمتها الحنون

أو دفء قبلتها وهمس صلاتها في فجر عيد

ويدي تحس نداوة العشب الحصيد.

يا ملحَ أول دمعة كانت غمائم في عيوني

دعني أحسك كالعبير

كالدفء في وجنات طفل، كالنسيم يمر بعد ضحى مطير

دعني أحسك يا الهي

كحليب أمي في شفاهي.

يا غفوة فوق الحصير

والماء كالبلور في كوز الفخار

وشجيرة اليقطين، فوق السقف، خضراء الثمار

والظل في البستان سري كما التف النعيم.

يا قطرة من نهرنا النتسي أطفأت الجحيم

يا قطرة من نهرنا المنسي، يا مطر النسيم

أطفئ سرابا في شفاهي

أطفئ صحارى في الضمير.

يا قطرة من نهرنا المنسي، يا خبز الكفاف.

أمطر على شفتي يا كوز الفخار

واهبط على قلبي، على قلبي، على الأرض البوار.
