Singer Among the Pigeons
Philip Terman
There are laws against you,
how you shit over everything—
noisemakers, nuisances, stalkers
of rooftops and statues, stealing
underfoot, gathering in gangs,
subject to regulations, legal
poisons, experimental research.
But then: Who knows? he said,
Your spokesman, your messiah—
In the next generation, perhaps
we’ll all return as hungry pigeons.
Feeding you on the corner of Broadway
and West 86th on his daily walk
to the corner table at the café
where he met his characters
for a vegetarian lunch—potatoes
and knish, a glass of cold tea—
you perched in gutters, waiting.
He was reliable as the faded
bathrobe and shabby slippers
he wrote in, typing his stories
straight through, as dependable
as his destroyed streets of Bilgoray,
the houses with low roofs covered
with tiles and moss, the rooms
of his own house, the bookshelves,
all the holy books, each word and letter,
as faithful as the Yiddish scholars and peddlers,
the dialect he spoke to you in, the shmeggege,
Convinced you’d understand him, the putz,
speaking in a dead tongue to rejected birds.
God’s creatures, he called you, an odd bird
himself with his flappy ears and wide eyes,
pale cheeks and beaked nose, awkward,
like his heroes, a bit of schlemiel, like Gimpel,
ugly, like you, a luftmensch living on air,
his bald head, you all agreed, a good target.
Once, one of you landed on his hat: a pigeon
wouldn’t land on just anyone, he asserted—
They can distinguish a Jewish writer
and wouldn’t do anything to hurt him.
That’s the way he thought, this believer.
Some of you might even be his ancestors,
his grandparents the rabbis or his mother—
though it was forbidden—the Talmudic scholar,
his father the wise man of Korchmalna Street.
Some of you may even have been all the Jews
he left behind, the ones he couldn’t save,
and now, perhaps one of you—which one,
among the tens of thousands scattered
and hungry throughout the city?—
coos in a language so stubborn it will not die.
