Raspberries
Poem by Sara Aslagson-Sahar
On the other side of raspberries
is my Dad.
Smiling,
chatting,
grabbing a handful out of the slotted container,
Green paper underneath.
Both of us standing at the kitchen sink;
Knowing all of the raspberries will be devoured in a moment.
Before
my stepmother came along.
Before I
was too grown.
Back when
we made pizza from scratch,
the grit of the cornmeal covering the table,
the flour painting it white.
When I was Daddy's little girl,
and there was no one else to interfere.
I once heard:
Not making a decision
is a decision.
And it hurts
that he didn't
choose me,
But we can continue to share raspberries.
But we can both choose raspberries.
I can still join him
in that snack.
Emulate him.
Call him my own.
Still be Daddy's little girl,
Every time,
every bite.
Maybe that's why it hurts so much
when the container is rotten,
when the raspberries are moldy and dull,
because We are rotten.
And I just want to go home.
but they're selling my blue painted bedroom.
Well she's selling the rubber duck themed bathroom,
and he will never say no.
On this side of raspberries
I stand alone.
