The mystic river underground

Runs softly on,

Runs in the dark.

It has no sound,

It has no shape.

It runs beneath the blazing desert,

Beneath the farms, beneath the forests,

Beneath the villages and towns.

It runs on and on

Down to unknown inlets,

Through caves and lakes and cisterns.

It calmly carves its course,

Throbbing with the pulse of the earth.

The mystic river underground

Runs on and on

And ever;

It has no sound,

It has no shape;

It leaves no trace

On any map,

Or any traveler’s guide.

النهر تحت الأرض / محمود البريكان

النهر الغامض تحت الأرض

يجري بهدوء

يجري في الظلمة

لا صوت له

لا شكل له

يجري تحت الصحراء المحترقة

تحت حقول وبساتين

وتحت قرى ومدن

يجري .. يجري

نحو مصبات مجهولة

عبر كهوف وبحيرات وصهاريج

ينحت مجراه ببطء

ويزامن نبض الأرض

النهر الغامض تحت الأرض

يجري أبداً

يجري .. يجري

لا أسم له

لا أثر له

في أية خارطة

في أي دليل سياحة ..
